EU and US agree to speed up steel trade discussions, Sefcovic says
European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said Friday that he and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick agreed to accelerate discussions on steel derivatives during his visit to Washington. Sefcovic told reporters that both sides were moving in a positive direction on steel. He said the United States and European Union faced the same issue of huge overcapacity in the global market.

Trump signature ends 20-year mining ban; Rep. Stauber calls it hard-fought victory for state, nation
President Donald Trump has signed federal legislation that overturns a 20-year ban on mining within a portion of the Superior National Forest. Trump on Monday signed Congressional Review Act H.J. 140, Minnesota Eighth District U.S. Congressman Pete Stauber said in a press release.

March 2026 steel output rises month on month
Despite military action in Iran and the Middle East followed by sea freight interruptions in that region, the global steel industry enjoyed an active March 2026, with melt shop output rising 12.7 percent month on month. Although steel output in the 69 countries reporting to the Brussels-based World Steel Association (Worldsteel) was lower this March compared with March 2025, it spiked compared with the previous month in part because of a rebound in the People’s Republic of China.

EU trade chief seeks ‘positive traction’ on US steel tariffs
The EU is seeking more progress in easing the effects of US steel tariffs, its trade chief Maros Sefcovic said Friday, adding that talks are “going in a positive direction.” The bloc also wants to align approaches with the United States towards third countries when it comes to steel trade, he added.

The US reduced imports of rolled steel by 35% y/y in January–March
According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the United States imported 3.74 million short tons of rolled steel products in the first quarter of 2026, a 35% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Total steel imports, including rolled products and semi-finished products, amounted to 5.09 million tons, down 34.7% year-on-year.
